Robert E. Nussbaum, age 70, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on April 4, 2012. He was born on March 2, 1942, the son of Earl J. Nussbaum and Dorothy O. (Olson) Nussbaum in Chewelah, Washington.
Bob grew up in Chewelah and attended local schools graduating from Chewelah High School in 1960. He joined the Navy in 1963 and served through 1967 as a Radioman aboard the USS Maddox DD731 and USS G.K. Mackenzie DD836 during the Vietnam Era, specifically in the Tonkin Gulf. Following his military service Bob worked for a telephone company in Seattle for over 30 years. Upon his retirement he and Claudette returned to Chewelah.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing, skiing and dancing. He loved working around the home and was very meticulous about his lawn. He was continuously tinkering with some of craft such as stained glass, woodworking, or ornamental concrete stepping stones. He was a member of the local American Legion and was a well known mainstay at the Chewelah Golf Course both as a golfer and a member of the workforce that kept the fairways and greens professionally manicured.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Earl James Nussbaum, brother "Jim" Earl James Nussbaum Jr. and sister Mary Ann Andrews. He is survived by his Wife of 46 years, Claudette, Chewelah, WA; son David Nussbaum and wife Lisa, Seattle, WA; mother Dorothy Lawerence, Chewelah, WA; brother Jack Nussbaum and wife Ann, Hayden, ID; Sister-in-law Janet Walker, Chewelah, WA; granddaughters Aleeah, Hannah, and Chelsea of Seattle, WA; and three great grandchildren.
Family graveside services for Robert E. Nussbaum were held at Chewelah Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.
