Amelia Alvord taught schools for thirteen years in Michigan.
After three of her children died, Amelia moved with her husband and family in a boxcar on the railroad to Brownwood where she began teaching in the Indian Creek Community.
In 1900 the family moved to Lamar County where she taught in the Palestine community.
She died May 10, 1923, while staying with her daughter, Ethel Irena, near Powderly.
She is buried beside her husband in the Long Cemetery.
