Grandpa Wiley became an orphan in 1913 after his mother (Julia Ann McClary Smith) passed away in 1908 and his father, Wiley W. Smith, Sr. passed away in 1913. He lived with his aunt, Louisa Smith Hargate and cousins in Wayne Co., MO until his marriage in 1923.

He had one sister, Jettie Alice, born between 1904 and 1907, who passed away in 1916 of Tuberculosis, and is buried in Doe Run Cemetery, St. Francois Co., MO.

After returning to Ellsinore, Carter Co., MO, grandpa married grandma, Frona Mae Link, on March 15, 1923 and they had 8 children:
Annabelle (b. 1924), Helen Catheline (b. 1925), Wiley W. (b. 1926), James Alfred "Jimmy" (b. 1929), Thelma Louise "Tootsie" (b. 1930), Dorothy Elizabeth "Liz"/"Tiny" (b. 1932), Billy Gene (b. 1934), and Tommy McCoy (b. and died 1936).

Grandpa and Grandma's wedding announcement was published in the 3-22-1923 edition of The Carter County News on the front page and read:

"Wiley Smith and Miss Frona Link were married last Thursday evening at the home of the officiating minister Rev. M. C. Leach. The groom is a well known young man who has spent all his life in this community. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Link of this city. The young folks have many friends here who trust they will have smooth sailing on the sea of matrimony."

After grandma's death in 1960, grandpa married Ruby James on September 3, 1961 in Las Vegas, NV. They lived in Los Angeles, CA until his death, and his body was returned to St. Louis, MO for the funeral and burial in Saint Trinity Cemetery next to grandma. His cause of death was a heart attack.
