Actor. He created the role of 'Tiger Brown', the Lord Mayor of London, in Berholdt Brecht and Kurt Weill's "The Threepenny Opera" (1928) and made "Mack the Knife" his signature song in his stage act. He also appeared in the films "Diary of a Lost Girl"(1928) and "The Blue Angel". He refused to leave Germany after the Nazi takeover in 1933, even though he was Jewish, and in 1942 he was sent to the concentration camp at Terecin. There he was forced to direct a Nazi propaganda film, "Hitler Builds a Town for the Jews" - the "town" being the camp. On October 28, 1944, one day before the Nazis shut down the gas chambers, Gerron and his wife were sent to Auschwitz and killed.
