James Bice/Byce Garrett was the son of Thomas Jefferson Garrett and Charlotte H. Collins. He was married twice, first to Arulia McNeill in 1868 and at her death in 1871, to Barcelona Haseltine Ray in Wilcox County, Alabama.
He had one daughter, Lemmie Arulia, from his first marriage, and ten children to his 53 year marriage to Barcelona "Bossie" Ray.
They are buried together under an ancient oak tree in Crescent Valley Cemetery.
