Henry Ruhl, son of Elizabeth (née Prosser) and George Ruhl, was born and grew up in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio. Henry Ruhl and Miss Elizabeth Shafer were married on 10 August 1851 in Richland County. The couple moved to Williams County, Ohio, and later to Fulton County, Ohio.

Henry Ruhl died at the age of 80 on 6 November 1909 in Franklin Township, Fulton County, Ohio.
