Son of William and Mary (Saunders) Gholson, he married Cary Ann Gholson on 14 May 1829. He was a member of the second CSA Congress. After the war, he formed a cotton and tobacco commission house in Liverpool, England with his son-in-law Col. Norman G. Walker. He died suddenly from an aneurism of the heart in Savannah, Ga. while returning from a trip to England. (Information from cemetery register, family records and headstone)

GHOLSON, Thomas Saunders, representative, was born in Gholsonville, Va., Dec. 9, 1809; son of Maj. William Gholson. He was graduated at the University of Virginia in 1827; was admitted to the bar; elected judge of the state circuit court in 1859, and in 1862 was elected a representative in the Confederate congress serving 1862-65. He promoted the building of new railway lines in his native state, founded and helped to support a public library in Petersburg, Va., and was prominent in the councils of Virginia. He died at Savannah, Ga., Dec. 13, 1868. (Biographies of Notable Americans, Vol. IV, p. 272, 1904.)
