Mary Bonnell was born in 1860 and moved from New York to Michigan (unknown date). She worked as a post office clerk circa 1880. A few years later she married a cousin, George Bonnell, who was an early Michigan photographer. They raised four children, H Roy, Iva (Stephens), Leslie, and Crawford. They lost their youngest son Crawford in World War I, when he died from battle wounds shortly after the Armistice in 1918.

George and Mary and their children lived in the village of Leslie, in Grayling, and, since 1906, in Lansing. Mary kept an interesting diary, a portion of which (from 1928 to 1933) has survived.

She died in Lansing's Sparrow Hospital, survived by three of four children and four grandchildren.
