JEFFERSON COUNTY - The family of a missing woman has waited nearly 17 years for some answers. Investigators now have them. They call it a major break in a cold case murder investigation.

On March 24, 1989, visitors to Lookout Mountain in Golden found the remains of a woman.

Now, investigators know her identity. They hope it is the first step in finding her killer.

In a cemetery in Golden there is a marker that reads, "Jane Doe, only known by God, may she rest in peace."

In 1989 she had been buried thanks to donations of a cemetery plot and a casket. All these years no one had known who the woman was.

Last fall, Jefferson County Sheriff's Investigator Cheryl Moore took on the cold case. She was determined to identify the 33-year-old Jane Doe. The victim's body had badly decomposed before it was found. The only thing investigators had to go on was a partial finger print. Investigator Moore ran it through an advanced computer program to try and find a match. There was one. The victim was Lisa Kay Kelly. She graduated from East High School in Denver.

All these years her sister, Robin Marshall said, "We kept thinking maybe she'd call. We thought maybe she'd gotten into some trouble and had just gone off to California."

The family says it is glad to know the truth but it is very difficult to hear. Marshall said, "It's ok to finally know what happened to her but now we don't have any hope left that she is ok."

Lisa Kelly's mother died never knowing what happened.

Kelly's family says they will have a service at her grave site soon. They will replace the Jane Doe marker with a new one. It will read, "Lisa Kay Kelly, she was lost but she was always loved."

If you have any information about the crime please call the lead investigator in the case, Cheryl Moore. Her number is 303-271-5625. You can also e-mail her at [email protected]
