— WESTERNPORT — Velma Proffitt, 82, of Horse Rock Road, Westernport, died on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at the Eagle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lonaconing. She was born on Dec. 8, 1927 in Fillmore, Ind, and was the daughter of the late Duward Phillips and Martha (Bishop) Phillips. She lived in Fillmore until the age of two and moved to Greencastle, Ind, where she attended school and graduated from Greencastle High School in 1945.
She married Fred Proffitt on Nov. 2, 1951 in Greencastle and resided there until 1954. She and her husband moved to Crawfordville, Ind, and resided there until 1967. She and her husband moved to Westernport in 1967 when he went to work for Westvaco Corporation. Velma was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont and was a member of the Aurora Durham Bible Class at the church. She was a member of the School House Quilters for many years. She was a member of the Westernport Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sority and was a member of the local Bridge club. She worked as a dental assistant with the Mineral County Health department for almost 15 years. She is survived by her devoted husband, Frederick L. Proffitt; two daughters, Diana K Snyder and husband Mark of Westernport, Cynthia Shumaker and husband Donald of Westernport; and one son, Allen L. Proffitt of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kristie L. Snyder, Carlee M McNeal, Courtney B. Snyder and Michael W. Shumaker; and three great-grandchildren, Delaney P.McNeal, Indiana W. McNeal and Finnigan C. McNeal. She is also survived by two sisters, Doris A. Ebbeler of Beach Grove, Ind. and Esther L Baldwin and husband George of Waverly, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. The Proffitt family will receive friends at the Fredlock Funeral Home in Piedmont, W.Va, on Friday from 2 until 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service for Velma will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Friday evening with the Rev. Harry Coleman officiating. The family has requested that memorials for Velma be directed to the Burlington Home Foundation, Rt. 220 S, Keyser, WV 26726.
