Records show he had 22 children: 17 sons and 3 daughters, plus 2 infants. Only 20 children are named above, unclear if he had 20 or 22. A 1917 article re a deadly housefire stated he was father of 19, it seems it referred to his living children.

This family was persecuted for many years by the "Regulators". William's father, and brothers, Berry and Robert, escaped to Oklahoma during the "land grab".

The Vanceburg Sun on January 18 1917 carried the headline: "BURNED TO DEATH. Two boys of William Bellomy burned to death when their house near Clarksburg burned Sunday night. Mr. Bellomy carried out the baby sleeping with him, and his wife rushed upstairs to awaken the six little boys and one girl sleeping there. She succeeded in getting the girl and four of the boys downstairs and out of the building, but two boys, Orville, age 11 and Eugene, age 7, perished in the flames. The mother was badly burned about the face while trying to rescue them, and Mr. Bellomy had his mustache burned off. Russel, age 14 was severely burned about the face and hands and all his hair was burned off. The family was taken to the Tim Carrington home. Inez, the 15 year-old daughter, sprained both ankles when she fell down the stairs. The family lost everything and a relief fund was set up. Mr. Bellomy said when they got outside the building they saw a young man standing in frot of the house and when he asked him to help he ran away. He thought it was Ray Hall, age 23. Hall was held on $200 bond. ..Mr. Bellomy is the father of nineteen children."
