CONCERNING SAMUEL ATKINSON
Samuel Atkinson died at his home, 209 Union street, Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock. His death was due to a complication of diseases and the infirmities of old age. A severe cold, which was contracted about two weeks ago, hastened the end. The funeral was held Monday at 2:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church, under the direction of the G.A.R. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. C. Macurdy [sic], who was assisted by Rev. R. H. Mize and Rev. W. A. Parker. The interment was made in Maplewood cemetery.
Samuel Atkinson was born in Durham, England, September 2, 1827. In 1854, with his family, he moved to the United States, settling in West Columbia, W. Va. Here he was employed as a miner. At the beginning of the civil war he enlisted in Company B Fourth West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. His enlistment papers were taken out June 5, 1861, and he served during the entire war without cessation of service. He was honorably discharged from the army at Wheeling, W. Va., July 5, 1865. He was a member of Preston B. Plumb Post 55, Grand Army of the Republic, and was its secretary for eighteen years. In 1862, the family moved to Nelsonville, Ohio, where they lived for two years. On February 13, 1885, they arrived in Kansas and settled in Lyon county, where they have lived ever since.
Mr. Atkinson was married in England, May 13, 1850, to Miss Mary A. Bolton. To this marriage eight children were born, three of whom are living. These are Samuel E. Atkinson, of Jasonville, Ohio; Mrs. Mary E. Cottle, of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Robert Atkinson, of Emporia. The dead man is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hardy and Mrs. Beach, both of whom live here.
Of the grandchildren who were here for the funeral were Ed Atkinson, of Parsons; Harry Atkinson, of Ottawa, and Robert A. Atkinson, of Anadarko, Okla. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. Retta Atkinson, of Ottawa, has been here for the past two weeks.

The dead man is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hardy and Mrs. Beach, both of whom live here.
