From The Daily Herald (Provo, UT) - 7 April 2010:
Dorothy Rose Meldrum Petersen passed away on 5 April 2010, at the age of 81, after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Dorothy was born on 13 October 1928 in Provo, Utah to Vernal Leon and Chloe Hansen Meldrum, one year prior to the stock market crash of 1929 and the beginning of the Great Depression. The Depression was hard on the family, particularly after their father lost his part of the old Meldrum family farm on Provo Canyon Road. The family moved often within Utah valley to Pleasant View, Edgemont, Orem, and Provo. Dorothy's father did custom threshing and later custom combining of grain as well as farming and was often paid in potatoes, fruit, pork, and other forms of barter, so, despite the difficult financial times, the family rarely lacked food.

When Dorothy was five years old, she fell out of a tree and shattered the bone in her left arm. Doctors thought several times of amputation; however, after wearing a cast for the entire year of first grade her arm was saved. Dorothy attended Page and Maeser elementary schools; Farrer Junior High; and graduated from the Provo High class of 1946. She played the saxophone in the high school band and in a small dance band, and some of her greatest memories were of band activities and performances.

After high school, Dorothy worked at State Bank of Provo (now Central Bank) and attended Brigham Young University. She married her childhood sweetheart, Verl H Petersen, also of Provo, on 30 June 1951, and the couple raised two children in Provo. The marriage was later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple on 15 March 1985.

Dorothy was very creative. She loved cake decorating, sewing, crafts, and especially oil painting. She was a member of the artists' section of the Women's council, serving as section chair in 1984. After the death of her father in 1976, she cared for her mother until her death in 1980. Her example of loving duty was inspiring. She later worked for Mountain America Credit Union from 1987 to 1999, where she worked as a loan officer. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and travelling with her husband until his passing in 2007.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her sister Norma Meldrum Witt, and her brother Leon H. Meldrum. She is survived by her brother, Floyd (Geraldine) Meldrum of Las Vegas, NV; two children, Boyd (Zina) Petersen and Susan Petersen, and four grandchildren, Mary Rose, Christian Degn, Nathanael Hugh, and Andrew Reid.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Edgemont 9th Ward Chapel, 4300 North Canyon Road, Provo. Friends and family may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center, Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 and at the church Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.
