"Henry Werner, 74, Long A Resident of County, Dies"

Henry Werner, 74, a resident of Linn county for more than half a century and assessor for Cedar township for many years, died at his home, near Louisa, at 6 a.m. today following a a short illness. He was born in Salem, NC, April 13, 1853. When a lad of 6 he accompanied his parents to Germany where he received the advantages of a high school education. At 18 years of age he went to New York returning later to Linn county to engage in farm work. Later he purchased a tract of fifteen acres which he operated as a truck farm. He had been township assessor for more than twenty-five years and secretary of the Buffalo school board for more than thirty years, holding this position at the time of his death. Since coming to Cedar township he had been a devoted member and active worker in the Evangelical church. His ac quaintanceship included practically every person in the township. Mr Werner was united in marriage to Anna Hanson in October 1875, and was the father of twelve children. Besides his wife, Anna, he is survived by 7 children: Charles, Lark, ND; Edward, Cedar Rapids; Harry, Marion; Mrs John Bard, South Milwaukee, Wis; Mrs RH Turner, Quasqueton; Mrs GW Albright, Watertown, SD; and Martha, at home. He is also survived by a brother, Edward A Werner, and 2 sisters, Mrs Mary Arp and Mrs George Cummings, all of Cedar Rapids, besides 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in the New Buffalo church at 2:15 pm Thursday preceded by private services in the home at 1:30 pm. Burial will be in the New Buffalo cemetery. The family requests no flowers.
