Ellen was the only child of Stephen & Hannorah Hurley Madden to have been born in the United States. The other three, as well as their parents, were born in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. Ellen had a child, Edward R., by her first marriage to Robert Whitters. Robert died shortly after Edward was born. She left Taunton with her family in 1857 and moved to Mendota, IL where she met and married Chester Dana Stevens. They had 7 children. Many of her family, including Edward Whitters, are buried in Maple Grove.
