Marion Barnhill, 90, of Des Moines, formerly of Ottumwa, died April 28, 2012, at Calvin Community in Des Moines.

Anna Marion Holmes was born Oct. 19, 1921, in Ottumwa to Esther and Harry Jay Holmes. She married Ernest Erie Barnhill Jr. "Barney" on May 23, 1942, and celebrated many years together with him until his death in 2007.

The couple made their home in Ottumwa for the majority of their lives, where they raised their four children. They moved to Des Moines in 1974, where Marion began working for then Banker's Life(Principal). She was empoloyed as a pension administrator, where she thoroughly enjoyed her career. Marion enjoyed civic involvement, having served as Republican Party chairwoman in Ottumwa as well as being very active in her local chapter of D.A.R. -the Jean Marie Cardinell chapter, among other activities. She and Barney loved jass music, related travel and, in retirement, especially attending the reunions of Barney's World War II shipmates from the USS Petersen. During their retirement years, the couple lived in Ankeny, enjoyed many friends in their community, then moved to Calvin Community, where Marion participated in many social events and appreciated another phase of her life.

Marion leaves a legacy of children, her sons, Dr.Mark(Kathryn)Barnhill of Des Moines and Blaine(Barbara)Barnhill of Winter Garden, Fla.; son-in-law Larry Gruwell of Le Claire; daughter, Stacey(Rev. Alex Schmidt)Barnhill Schmidt of Leavenworth, Wash.; as well as grandchildren, Alison Barnhill, Meredith Long, Jon Barnhill, Kate Barnhill and Grace Barnhill Swartz; and seven great-grandchildren.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Jayne Anne Gruwell; her husband, E.E. Barnhill Jr.; and two brothers, Harry J. and George Holmes.

A memorial service will be held at Calvin Community at a later date with a private family interment. Memorial gifts may be made to the Good Smaritan Fund at Calvin Community, whose extraordinarily loving care gave Marion joyful relatinships through her last days.
