John Wesley Cockrell was born on March 22, 1816 in Morgan County, Kentucky to William Cockrell and Nancy (Wright) Cockrell, both originally from Virginia. After moving to Missouri, Wesley married Sarah "Sallie" Wilson on February 25, 1835, in Johnson County, Missouri. A few years later the Cockrell family headed for the frontier land of Dallas Texas. Wesley and his family arrived in Dallas in 1843, before Dallas was even a County of Texas. Wesley preempted wild land on the west side of Dallas near an area known now as Arcadia Park. Wesley was a farmer, rancher and engaged in the hauling of goods by wagon from Houston to Dallas, and from Shreveport, LA. to Dallas. His cousin Alexander Cockrell known as "The Father of Dallas" lived with Wesley briefly after arriving to the Dallas area. The only reminder of the Cockrell family farm today is a small family cemetery at the top of a hill near Davis Street and Cockrell Hill Road, where most of the family rests peacefully.
