Y. son of late Rev. William H. and Jane (Nutt) Gilder; brother of Jeannette Leonard, Robert Fletcher and Richard Watson Gilder.
Entered U.S. Naval Acad, 1872; resigned, 1874. Reporter, Newark, N. J., 1874-77; wrote New York letters to Boston Advertiser, Buffalo Courier, etc.; reporter and ass't city editor, N. Y. Herald, 1877-80; with sister, Jeannette L, started the Critic, 1881, (co-editor for 21 years); president, The Critic Co. 1893-1901.
Treasurer, Am. Copyright League, 1886; an organizer and first sec. of Univ. Settlement Soc. of N. Y.; contributor of prose and verse to various magazines; lit. adviser to The Century Co. 1895-1902; author of other works. Married May 7, 1892.
