Enlisted in Company B, Virginia 20th Heavy Artillery Battalion on 10 Mar 1862. Promoted to Full 3rd Corporal on 31 Dec 1864. Mustered out on 25 Apr 1864. Transferred to Company I, Virginia 38th Infantry Regiment, Stewart's Brigade, Pickett's Division on 25 Apr 1864. Slightly wounded at Bermuda Hundred, but never lost a day of service. Captured 6 days before Lee's surrender and was held prisoner in Newport News and released 2 months later.
