Arriving in California on muleback for the Gold Rush, after two years of gold mining he returned to his practice of law and on April 30, 1851, he became the city attorney for San Francisco. Then in 1861 he was elected Attorney General of California. Later he served as a United States Attorney, in the cabinet of President Ulysses S. Grant. He was also a regent of the University of California as well as park commissioner of the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove. When Ulysses S. Grant visited San Francisco in 1879, Frank Morrison Pixley was chairman of the committee that prepared for his visit.
