The funeral for Ray Mahany, 82, of Watford City, formerly of Minnewaukan, was held Wed. at the First Presbyterian Church in Watford City & at 2 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Minnewaukan. Interment was in the Minnewaukan Cemetery. He died Dec. 21, 1998 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Watford City, where he had been a resident since Dec. 4.
Pastor Sharon Norstog officiated at the Watford City service. Pastor Betty Stedman officiated at the Minnewaukan service. Caroline Schwarts & Fay Huffman were organists. Robyn Schwarts was soloist. The Gunnerud-Dietrich American Legion Post 86 of Minnewaukan accorded military honors. The Fulkerson Funeral Home of Watford City & the Nelson Funeral Home of Minnewaukan were in charge of arrangements.
Raymond W. Mahany was born Aug. 30, 1916 in Minnewaukan to James and Laura (Dot) Montague Mahany. He graduated from Minnewaukan High School in 1934. While in high school he worked at the Minnewaukan Theater & took part in basketball & track. He worked at the Federal Emergency Relief Act office in Minnewaukan for a year before enrolling at Mayville State Teachers College in 1935. He won many track awards in college. During his senior year he was nominated to "Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities." He earned a B.S. degree in 1939 & served as a teacher, principal & coach at Hoople until he was inducted into the US Army in June 1942. He served in the US for 2 years & then was sent to saipan in the Mariannas Islands with a B-29 bomber squadron. He was discharged Nov. 24, 1945. In Jan. of 1946 he began teaching in Sheyenne & in the fall of 1946 moved to Larimore, where he taught, coached & eventually became principal. He married Beulah Berg Dec. 26, 1950 in Devils Lake. They lived in Larimore until moving to Watford City in 1955 where he was principal until retiring July 1, 1980. He earned a master's degree in education from UND. After retiring he was the Watford City building inspector until 1990.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Watford City, the Lions, Eagles & the American Legion. He & his wife each received the Honorary Chapter Farmers Award from the Watford City Future Farmers of America. He enjoyed hunting, fishing & golf.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Michael & Barb Mahany of Williston, Douglas & JoEllen Mahany of Minot & David & Patti Mahany of Estes Park, Colo.; 6 grandchildren; & a sister and brother-in-law, Grace & Milson Ball of Minnewaukan.
He was preceded in death by his parents & 4 brothers; James, Glenn "Buzz", Orville "Toby" & Harry Mahany.
