U.S. Congressman. He attended the Schenectady Academy, Union College, in 1811 and engaged in mercantile pursuits in Schenectady, New York. He served as an Ensign in the militia and played an important role by lending the government money to use in equipping a naval fleet during the War of 1812. In 1827, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress, serving until 1829. After his term, he was Mayor of Schenectady, New York, (1832-34, 1836). Again elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, he served (1837-39). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served again as mayor of Schenectady, (1842-45). He then engaged in banking and business venues until his death at age 64.
