US Congressman. Born in Schenectady, New York, he graduated from Union College, in 1842, then graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a civil engineer, in 1843. He was working as a surveyor in Wisconsin, when studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced to practice in New York City in 1847. In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1875. He declined to be a candidate for re-nomination and was elected to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving (1877-79). He again declined to be a candidate for re-nomination, to serve as trustee of Union College and was president of the American Bar Association, (1881-82). He died at age 56 in New York City.
