Aquilla Jones (did he go by A. J.?) Mock was the third of seven known children of Peter Mock (1803-1881) and Phoebe Jones Mock (c1801-p1880). It is not known where Peter and Phoebe are buried, but probably in northern Davidson County, North Carolina.

Aquilla was a clerk at the time of the 1850 census (when he was living with his parents at Midway Township, Davidson County, North Carolina). Aquilla married Charlotte C. Cowan (1839-1921) on 28 Mar 1855 at Rowan County, North Carolina. Aquilla was a relatively wealthy dry goods merchant in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.

Aquilla and Charlotte were the parents of nine known children, namely:

1. Lela Cowan Mock (1856-1857)
2. Leonidas ("Lee") Cowan Mock (1857-1924)
3. Fannie Cowan Mock (1860-1876)
4. Mary White Mock (1862-1925)
5. Thomas J. Mock (1864-1895)
6. Charlotte (Lottie) Jenkins Mock Bain (1867-1945)
7. John Richard Mock (1869-1909)
8. Corrine C. Mock Atherton (1877-1953)
9. Claudia Lavine Mock Etting Wetherill (1882-1966)

In 1900 and 1910 the widow Charlotte said she was the mother of nine, six living. The daughters Charlotte, Corrine and Claudia all lived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from c1900 onward.
