Hattie Knox Hicks was married to Curtis Hicks and together they raised five daughters who all became accomplished young women. Hattie was a devoted mother and wife who maintained a home and family lifestyle for her husband and daughters. Sadly, Hattie and Curt lost two daughters, Linda Hodge and Sherry Conley, before their own deaths. In their grief, they learned to love and cherish their grandchildren even more. Hattie loved to run her home, feed her family and any friends who dropped by to visit. She was well known for serving fresh fish which Curt caught to family and friends who loved to sit at her table and enjoy the fruits of her labors. Late in life, Hattie spent several months caring for her father-in-law, Ballard Hicks, and said, "I just couldn't see that man not being taken care of." Her capacity for love, caring, and human decency was gigantic. During the final months of her husband Curt's long battle with cancer, Hattie almost never left his side and devoted nearly every second of every day to caring for his needs. She was a deeply compassionate and caring woman.
