CAR HITS AND KILLS FARMER
Injuries Prove Fatal to James Coon, 84, of Washington

WASHINGTON, Iowa – Mr. James Coon, 84, prominent farmer of Highland township, and former assessor and trustee of the township, was killed at 10:30 o'clock this morning near Ainsworth when he was struck by a car driven by Mr. H. H. Bramer, 64, of Fairfield.

The accident occurred near the crest of a hill on the east edge of Ainsworth.
Mr. Bramer, who was driving east, said that Mr. Coon had been walking on the left shoulder of the highway but that as the car came over the crest of the hill Mr. Coon started to walk across the pavement. The driver of the car said he sounded his horn several times without drawing the attention of Mr. Coon.

A funeral procession, going west on the highway, was immediately behind Mr. Coon when the accident occurred. Mr. Coon died en route to the Washington hospital.
Mr. Coon had been living with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Rath, at their home near the junctions of highways Nos. 2 and 218 where they also operate a gasoline station, and was walking to Ainsworth.

He is survived by six children, M. T. Coon, of Haskins, Oscar, of Riverside, Mrs. Earl Marshall, of Riverside, Mrs. Rath, Leslie, of Iowa City, and William, of Nichols; and one sister, Mrs. John Nicholson, of Haskins. His wife and one son, Jesse, preceded him in death.
