Although Edward Williams was a much-respected Victorian landscape painter in his own right, he is remembered primarily as the father of five sons who were all well-known artists. As such, he is sometimes called the founder of the so-called "Barnes School" of painting, which is characterized by landscapes featuring an interplay of light and shadows in settings ranging from mountain landscapes to farm and river scenes, to meadows with grazing cattle.
