He married Elsie Virginia Collie on September 30, 1939 at Laurel Grove Baptist Church in Virginia. He served in the US Army 1943-1945 in the ETO with the Yankee Division. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James. He was survived by his wife Elsie, sisters Pansy Barrow & Sarah Walker, daughter Betty Cook (Jim), sons Richard (Pam) and Michael; grandchildren David, Lisa, Rebecca, Graham and Katie; great-grandson David Clayton.
