Mr. Leopold Zabel, age 93, one of Onaga's oldest residents, passed away April 8 at Community Hospital. He had been in ill health for some time but was hospitalized only a few days.
Leopold Zabel, son of John and Mena Zabel, was born February 22, 1873 on a farm west of Onaga.
He was united in marriage to Minnie Schwant June 17, 1897 and they became parents of three children.
Mr. and Mrs. Zabel spent their early years on the farm and in 1922 moved to Onaga where they lived until 1963 when they went to live with their daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. C. D. Logan, in Merriam.
Mr. and Mrs. Zabel moved back to Onaga to Golden Acres Rest Home January 1 and Mrs. Zabel passed away shortly thereafter. Mr. Zabel continued to live at the rest home.
He was a member of the Congregational Church. He served for many years on Onaga's city council and was always interested and active in community affairs.
He is survived by the daughter, Mrs. Vida Logan of Merriam; two sons, Walter W. Zabel of Vancouver, Wash., and Marvin L. Zabel of Overland Park, Kans.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, F. E. Zabel of Wheatridge, Colo.
Funeral services were at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Congregational Church with interment in Onaga Cemetery.
