On April 18, 1996, Shannon Sanderson drove to Tunica MS and spent the evening gambling at Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall. She won about $5,000 playing blackjack before cashing out early in the morning of April 19, 1996. Shannon returned to her former in-laws' house to pick up her three children but was kidnapped from their driveway. Her body was found on May 9, 1996, at an abandoned house in Eudora MS by the new owners who had come to inspect the property.
The killer was convicted of first-degree felony murder and aggravated robbery and sentenced to death for the murder and to a consecutive 30-year prison sentence for the aggravated robbery charge. He had noticed her success at the card table and followed her when she left the casino with the intent of robbing her. He took all her cash, jewelry, and, worst of all, her life.
