Buried in the name of Robert Brown RENNIE, this is Bob Brown, whose birth certificate shows him named formally as John Robert Rennie BROWN. His parents, originally RENNIE (Scotland) eventually adopted (probably informally) the name BROWN-RENNIE (and occasionally RENNIE-BROWN) in New Zealand and finally called themselves BROWN. Several of his siblings continued to use the hyphenated name form for all of their lives. His birth name registration is likely to be a transcription error by the Registrar, with his intended name being John Robert RENNIE-BROWN, but he was always known as Bob Brown At his death, the unknown informant presumably knew of the Brown-Rennie history and advised his family name as such but, again, the Registrar recorded the surname simply as RENNIE, with 'Brown' being recorded as a given name.

Bob Brown was a prominent Labour Party activist in the Palmerston North area in the 1920s.

The grave is not marked, but the cemetery's archives contain a complete record of his burial, including its precise location.
