James S. Royal, an Oregon pioneer of 1852, Indian fighter and former owner of a large portion of Portland's now thickly populated east side, died at home in Forest Grove Sunday morning of acute kidney trouble.

Born at Piqua, Ohio, April 13, 1829 and came to Oregon with his parents, crossing the plains by ox team. They settled in Powell Valley, taking up a DLC which he farmed until 1861 when he moved to a 60 acre tract of land upon the east side of the Willamette river across from Portland. This tract embraces the blocks now bounded by Thirtieth, fortieth and Division Streets and Hawthorne avenue. Here he raised strawberries and small vegetables to supplied the city market.

He frequently replenished his larder with deer meet, killing the game from his doorstep. A walnut tree which he planted just east of what is now the boundary line of Ladd's addition, still stands as a monument to his industry.

He moved to this city in 1903, living a retired and restful life.

On April 29, 1856 he married in Portland, Miss Jane Powell Pugh who died in 1869. On October 4, 1871 he married Mrs. Wealtha Markee Smith of this city.

Besides his widow, he is survived by two brothers, C. F. Royal, Salem and William Royal, Elma, Washington; two sisters: Mrs. Mary C. Alderson, Portland, widow of the late Rev. C Alderson, Portland, and Mrs. Elizabeth Mahan, Topeka, Kansas. A son, Earl O. Royal, Portland and five daughters: Mrs. Jennie Hines, Siletz reservation, Mrs. O W. Tarr, Gresham; Mrs. C. C. Sellers, Portland; Mrs. F. W. Jones and Mrs. A. J. Douglas, this city; seven grand children also survive.

A notable figure at annual reunions of the Oregon Pioneer Association and possessed a fund of early stories of early days in Oregon. He was a Captain of the firs Company of volunteers organized in Powell Valley to take field against the Indians when the report of the uprising and massacre which occurred in the Cascades reached the coast. Affiliated with the Methodist Church.
