Civil War Confederate Major General, US Congressman. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving 1852 to 1855. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was the Ambassador to Spain when he resigned and returned to his home state of Kentucky in 1861. He served in the Confederate Army, attained the rank of Major General and was appointed the Minister Plenipotentiary Confederate minister to Mexico, serving until the end of the war. After the war, he served as a member of the Kentucky State house of Representatives in 1868 and 1869.
