Pte Gillespie enlisted on 8 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. Before joining the AIF Pte Gillespie was a police constable. Before returning to Australia on 12 November 1915 he served as a company sergeant major.
He died at the No.11 Australian General Hospital Caulfield.
He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, Victory Medal & British War Medal.
