Melvin Gilbert Berlin, the son of Robert and Leta (Gilbert) Berlin was born October 15, 1914 on a farm in Page County, Iowa northwest of Essex. He died on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Melvin was raised in the Coburg area and graduated from Coburg Consolidated High School in 1933. He was united in marriage to Blanche Peterson on November 3, 1945 at the Fremont Lutheran Church in Nyman. Mel and Blanche farmed east of Essex, south of Stanton, and southwest of Red Oak, before 1961 when they purchased their farm 3 miles east of Coburg. Melvin farmed throughout most of his life. He also worked as an insurance salesman for Farm Bureau Service from 1959 to 1963. Mel worked for the Essex and Villisca Elevators from l963 to l967 and for J.D. Oil Company in Red Oak from l967 to l983. Melvin was elected to the Board of Supervisors of Montgomery County in 1978 and served until December of l984. Mel and Blanche moved into Red Oak in l992. Mel was a member of the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman. Since 1946, Melvin had been a very active member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge #1304. He served as Exalted Ruler from l957-1958, Chaplin for many years, and District Deputy. Melvin was bestowed the honor of 2001-2002 "Iowa Elk of the Year". Melvin enjoyed bowling, playing cards with his "Card and Snooker Club" and even tried golfing. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters: Hazel, Daisy and Alice; 3 brothers: Robert, Manzel and Kenneth.

Melvin is survived by his wife: Blanche Berlin of Red Oak, IA; 5 children: Donna Lewis and husband Jim of Red Oak, IA; Sharon Scherbring and husband Jim of Marana, AZ; Randall Berlin and wife Harriet of Columbus, NE; Patricia Kaess and husband Todd of Azle, TX; Douglas Berlin and wife Sheryl of Atlantic, IA; 10 grandchildren: Robert Bishop and wife Randee; Randall Bishop and fiancé Tracee; Lindsay Ogle and husband Brent; Heidi Elliott and husband Chris; Kelsey Berlin; Nathan Kaess; Philip Kaess; Adam Berlin; Katie Berlin; Megan Berlin; great-grandson: Jonathon Bishop; brother: Ray Berlin of Essex, IA; sisters: Vera Williamson of Eugene, OR; Clara Holmes of Shenandoah, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
