Sallie was of the James Horace Lacy family of "Chatham", the Lacy plantation just across the Rappahanock River from Fredericksburg, Virginia. When the war broke out Lacy had his wife and family remove themselves from the house at Chatham, which proved to be a smart move as it ended up being under occupation by the Federal troops. The family moved around to various family and friends. This is the reason that Sallie was born in Dublin, Virginia.

Sallie never married, but left a treasure trove of her writing, about her family, Chatham, the war and other memories.

Her siblings were:

William Jones Lacy
Agnes Alexander Lacy who married James Power Smith, who was the aide-de-campe to Stonewall Jackson
Lucy Lyle Lacy
Beverley Randolph Drury Lacy
(Rev.) James Horace Lacy III
Elizabeth Bryan Lacy
