Douglas Eugene Cross, 82, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.
He was a graduate of the Abbey, an all-boys high school in Cañon City, Colo., and studied pre-medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
Douglas left Creighton to join the United States Navy in the Korean War and was a Navy pilot from 1950 until 1972, and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He had served on the USS Hornet No.12 aircraft carrier and also the USS Oriskany No.34 aircraft carrier, and retired as a lieutenant commander.
In 1959, he was asked to become a Blue Angel pilot, but declined due to his growing family.
Mr. Cross is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dolores (Schord) Cross, of Groveland, and children and their spouses, Kathryn M. Cross and Michael Giari, of San Mateo, Lisa M. Cross Bonahoom and Bob Bonahoom, of Hillsborough, Carol A. Cross, of Tracy, Douglas E. Cross, Jr. and Cathleen Cross, of Fremont, Theresa J. Cross (Hale), of San Francisco, Maura K. Cross Parrish, of Penn., and Jerry W. Cross, of Burlingame; stepchildren Dawn Cardona, of Cottonwood, Ariz., Marilee Hamilton and her husband Steve Hamilton, of Carson City, Nev., Bob Schord and his wife Diane Schord, of Livermore, Bill Schord and his wife Cindy Schord, of San Jose and Julie Hughes and her husband Rob Hughes, of San Leandro; grandchildren, Rhys Bonahoom, Ian Bonahoom, Marisa Bonahoom, Jerome Kief, Joseph Kief, Georgia Giari, Brittany Prince, Chiara Cross, Rand Hale, Tshy Parrish and Taylor Parrish, Eric Cardona, Lisa Cardona, Bob Hamilton, Donny Hamilton, Matthew Hamilton, Alex Schord, Gabrielle Schord, Jeffrey Schord, Danielle Schord and Jebediah Hughes.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Wildgen) Cross, whom he met during high school and married in 1953, his parents, Douglas Alvin and Gladys (MacRae) Cross, his infant sister, Delphine Cross, in 1931, and his infant daughter, Julianne Cross, in 1963.
