JAMES ARTHUR COE, 74, a resident of the Walla Walla Health Care and Rehabilitation Center died there Oct. 22, 1997.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Presbyterian Church, Milton-Freewater, with the Rev. Gerrit Van Braadwijk officiating. The concluding service and burial will follow in Milton Freewater Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center, Doernbecher Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main SL, Milton-Freewater.

Mr. Coe was born Jan. 27, 1923, in College Place, to Arthur and Lulu Hart Coe. Raised in the Walla Walla Valley, he attended schools in Helix, Milton Freewater and Prescott.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater, from 1942.45. He was most proud of his service to the nation and was honored as grand marshal of the VFW parade on Nov. 11, 1993. He was married to Norma Coffman from 1949 to 1994.

He retired as projectionist for the Liberty Theater. Gardening was his passion and his garden at his home was featured in the Union Bulletin.

He volunteered with the VFW, was a Keystone Cop for Rotary Day and spent many years playing Santa for local children.

Surviving are four daughters, Sara Coe of Troutdale, OR, Alicia Herres and Jenny Farnham of Walla an Emily Coe of Seattle; two adopted daughters, Jackie Johnson Wood of Walla Walla and Nancy Johnson Smithson of Kirkland, WA; two sons, James Coe of Denver and David Coe of Pass Robles, CA; his care provider and friend, Norma Coe of Walla Walla; thirteen grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Matthew; a sister, Anna Marie Yantis; and two brothers, Edwin and William.
