A gold miner by profession, William also served as a Justice of the Peace. He came from a large family with early roots in Iowa Hill, and was an active member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He married Ella Pashby (sister of Etta) in 1889. As mining became scarce in the Iowa Hill area, he went to Siskiyou County to mine there, where he was killed in a cave-in at the age of 37. He left his wife and three small children. After his death, friends bought William out of the mine, 22 miles, by mule. They then placed him on a wagon for another 65 miles to Redding. He was then taken home by train to his loved ones in Iowa Hill.
