Mildred Irene Anderson

YAKIMA - Long time Yakima resident, Mildred Anderson died on Monday, May 7, 2007 at Heritage Grove Care Center.
Mildred was born in Camas, Washington on November 14, 1912. Her parents were Homer and Maude Clark and she was the oldest of ten brothers and sisters. She met her husband, Carl in Aberdeen, WA while working in that area. Her mom called her Mildred, but along came Carl and she was Millie after that.
Because of the depression, the Clark family and Carl moved to Yakima in 1931 to work in fruit. They were married on April 13, 1932 and lived on South 10th Street. Carl and Homer worked for people, cleaned homes, and did anything they could find. Millie worked for Libby's Cannery, until Howard was born in 1936.
In January, 1938, they bought 1/2 acre on Englewood Avenue, which consisted of a one room house, a chicken coop and an outhouse. They slowly built up the house one room at a time as money became available. Their second son, Bob, was born there in 1941. The back half was used as a garden and to raise chickens and rabbits. During summer and fall, mom made sure the table was always full of peas, beans, corn, and/or potatoes. She was an excellent cook. And in the winter, the basement always seemed full of mom's canning from the garden and local fruit orchards. And we all loved her cinnamon rolls.
She became very active in her sons' lives. She was a Cub Scout leader for several years for both of them. After cub scouting, she followed them to Castlevale School where she worked as a cook, eventually became head cook. She retired in 1977. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge, and eventually became a Noble Grand.
Mom loved camping and fishing. As soon as fishing season opened, she and Carl would pack up the family and we would spend weekends on the Tieton or American River. This continued until Carl died in February 1973.
After retirement she became active in the Yakima Senior Center, volunteering for 25 years. She cooked for the lunch program, helped with the ceramics class, and loved to play pool. She also loved traveling. It started with summer trips down to see her mother in Pasadena, CA. After retirement, she traveled the US: Alaska, the Midwest, to California, and to New England. She even went to Phoenix to watch the Mariners practice.
She is survived by a loving extended family: 2 sons, Howard (Pam) Anderson of Hamilton, MT; Bob (Kay) Anderson of Torrance, CA; and daughter-in-law Bev (Don) Kearns of Selah. Her 2 grandchildren are: Jeff (Steph) Anderson and Todd Anderson. Winnie Johnson of Wenatchee; and Morris Clark of Medford, Ore are the surviving siblings.
Viewing will be held Thursday, May 17 from 1 until 5 p.m. and Friday, May 18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima.
A graveside funeral will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 18 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Valley Hills Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
