John ended his life by choice. The tragedy took place with his sister and mother looking on in horror. He was a seemingly happy 18 year-old from West Hills in Southern California. Those that knew him post how much they loved him on his FB page. John chose to jump off a cliff in Palos Verdes Estates, California.

Interestingly, it was sheer luck that a counselor at nearby Palos Verdes High School noticed him. He apparently looked like he was praying and chanting with arms outstretched, standing on the edge of the cliff. The counselor grew concerned and went to him. She convinced him to sit with her under a tree for a while.

His mom and sister arrived to help but he seemed quite determined to end his life. He began arguing with his mom so loudly that a neighbor called the police. When the police arrived he apparently thanked the counselor for her help. Then said he had something he had to do and started running for the cliff's edge.

Having lost a few of my own friends to suicide I have to say that it is a horrible loss for those left behind. It is such a permanent solution to what is, more often than not, a temporary situation. Depression is treatable and can often be well managed through the use of medication. If you know someone that needs help, please urge them to seek the care that can save their life.

John I hope you have found the peace you sought. I know you are missed by so many.
