John Tilden Bailey (1917 - 2012)

John Tilden Bailey, 95, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Public memorial service: 3 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Bailey will lie in state until 9 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

John was born to the late William J. Bailey Sr. and Susa C. Bailey on March 11, 1917, in Denver, Colo. He graduated from Central High School in Fort Worth and TCU, and he earned his law degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. John was licensed to practice law in Texas for over 70 years. After he received his law degree, he joined the Texas National Guard 36th Infantry Division and served in World War II as an assistant to the adjutant general of the 79th Infantry Division and the Ninth U.S. Army Headquarters. In 1945, John set aside his personal aspirations and, at his father's request, accepted a position with Mount Olivet Cemetery. John assumed management of Greenwood and Mount Olivet cemeteries in 1950 and remained in that capacity for over 50 years. John, also fondly referred to as "Lovable," enjoyed swimming at The Fort Worth Club, attending meetings with The Breakfast Club and playing gin rummy. Mr. Bailey's family is grateful for the dedicated and generous care that John received from his home health and hospice providers. John was married to the late Mary Cook Bailey and was also preceded in death by his son, John Hardy Bailey.

Survivors: Daughters, Josephine Bailey McMahon of Arlington and Susa Bailey Glenn of Fredericksburg; grandchildren, Lara Elizabeth Sanders, Emily Jane Davenport and John Cullen McMahon, as well as John Cullen's wife, Blanca McMahon; and their daughter, Mr. Bailey's great-grandchild, Hailey McMahon.
