official date of death is June 6, 1944, and official place of death is Caen. Upon landing at Normandy, Capt. Hotchkiss was either injured in his fall or wounded by enemy fire. He made his way through the countryside to Caen where a French family took him in. The Germans discovered his whereabouts and took him from the French household.

Richard and Pauline were high school and college sweethearts. They grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, and were married in June of 1942, against her father's wishes. He did not wish to see her become a war widow, but she became one anyway. Dick and Pauline had no children together. Captain Hotchkiss was originally buried in France before he was returned to his home town of Manhattan, Kansas.
