William Prentice Bishop was a Confederate veteran, enlisting at Paraclifta, Sevier Co., Arkansas on Oct. 3, 1863 initially as a member of Capt. C.K. Holman's Co. C, Pettus Battalion, Ark. Mounted Volunteers State Troops. He and his younger brother Joseph L. Bishop were later mustered into the Confederate Service on Oct. 4, 1864 as members of Capt. C. K. Holman's Company "C", 10th Arkansas Cavalry CSA commanded by Colonel Robert C. Newton. Microfilm documents in the Herndon Supplement of Arkansas CSA Soldiers stored at the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock, Arkansas list both 5th Sergeant William P. Bishop and his brother 3rd Corporal Joseph L. Bishop as being "guards at Camp Reed during the Winter of 1864-65"; CSA Camp Reed was near Dooleys Ferry on the Red River, at Fulton, Hempstead Co., Arkansas.

He was the son of James Wiley Bishop and Mary Eliza McMullen. He married Cora Ella Sparks on 15 Jan 1875 in McLennan Co., TX.
