Lawrence was born in Brockton,MA and grew
up Bridgewater.He enlisted in the Marines
4 September 1968 at the Boston Recruiting
Office.He was a member of Platoon 2020,
during his basic training at Parris Island MCRD.
He arrived in Vietnam 19 February 1969,and
was assigned to 1st Platoon,Echo Company,
2nd Battalion,3rd Marine Regiment,3rd Marine
During the early morning hours of 10 August
1969 1st Platoon was attacked by an NVA
Company of the 304th NVA Division,who had
earlier conducted a ground assault against the
3rd Platoon and the attached H&S Mortar
Platoon,at Mutters Ridge,8 kilometers from
Vandergrift Combat Base,and 16 kilometers
north northwest of Ca Lu Airfield,during
Operation Idaho Canyon.
He received multiple fragmentation wounds
from enemy mortar fire and grenades,penet-
rating his left leg,left arm,face,neck and
chest.He was wounded several times while
rescuing two Marines,during the NVA assault
on their night defensive position.
Lawrence died of his wounds August 11,at
1645H,at the Naval Station Hospital in
He was single and served his country for 11 months and 7 days and had been in Vietnam
for 5 months and 23 days.KIA#44.680.
Lawrence was 19 years,2 months and 7 days old.

The Silver Star was awarded to LCpl Lawrence for braverly under fire while saving the lives of two Marines.

Before her death,the mother of LCpl Dowd had made a request to honor her son.In lieu of flowers,she requested that a Christmas care package be sent to any soldier serving his,or her country overseas.

The Interchange on United Sates Highway Route 495,on Routes 24 and 25 in the towns of Bridgewater and Raynham shall be designated and known as the Lance Corporal Lawrence Kent Dowd Interchange,in memory of Lawrence K Dowd.
