Air Mechanic 1st Class R. K. Barlow was killed after the crash of the RFC's Bleriot monoplane, piloted by Lieutenant Robin Reginald SKENE, shortly after their take-off from Netheravon in Wiltshire, on 12 August 1914. They were planning to fly to Dover, and then to France, at the start of the First World War. Both airmen perished in the accident; they were the first members of the Royal Flying Corps to die on active duty and were among the first British casualties of the war.
