Marion Frances Sugden, 97, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Newton Center.

She was born on March 31, 1911 in Sanford, a daughter of Joseph and Alice (O'Rourke) Smith. Mrs. Sugden graduated from Sanford High School in 1929. She then attended Nasson College graduating in 1932.

A lifelong member of the Sanford First Baptist Church she sang in the adult choir, was a Sunday school teacher, Children's Choir Director, Deaconess and a Ladies Aid Member. She was also involved with the H.D. Goodall Hospital Auxiliary. She worked in the Hospital Thrift Shop 20 years and was chairperson for the Christmas in July Fair. Mrs. Sugden was involved in the reading program at the Roosevelt School and was a member of the Sanford/Springvale Nasson Association. She was a member of the former Richmond Glee Club and member of the Sanford/Springvale Searchlight Club. For a short time she was a teacher at the Emerson School and then worked as a secretary at the Sanford Mills.

Mrs. Sugden is predeceased by her husband, Frank Mitchell Sugden, a daughter, Barbara Smith Petrin, and stepsons, Francis Mitchell Sugden Jr. and Dr. George Scott Sugden Sr.

Mrs. Sugden is survived by her nine grandchildren, Cathy Sleeper and her husband, David, Kimberly Ann Baer and her husband, Dirk, George Scott Sugden Jr. and his wife, Beth, Mark Francis Sugden, Anne Elizabeth Sugden Ippolito and her husband, Luca, Sharon Ticehurst, Susan Turner and her husband, Gary, Xochilt Sugden and Bruce Sugden, 11 great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Scott, Mary Kate, Anne, Rebecca, Kristen, Gabriella, Mattia, Andriano, Becca, and Franchesca. She will also be missed by her homecare giver, Fran Thompson.

A funeral service for Mrs. Sugden will take place on Monday, June 9 at 11am at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. An hour of visitation will be held from 10am until the time of the funeral service. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
