"Sarah White, eldest daughter of John and Eliza White, was born at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, January 1st, 1849, and departed this life at Rippey, Iowa, June 29, 1919, age 70 years, 5 months and 28 days. When five years of age the family removed to Viroqua, where she grew to womanhood.

She was a graduate of the Viroqua High School and taught school for several years in Vernon County. On August 22nd, 1870 she was united in marriage to Robert G. Martin of Springville, Iowa.

Immediately after her marriage she and her husband came to Greene County, Iowa, settling on a farm near Dana, where she experienced all the hardships of pioneer life and where she taught the first public school in what is now the Independent district of Dana. To this union were born four children, Francis M. Martin of Jefferson, Iowa; Dr. W.G. Martin of Rippey, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie E. Harris of Frontier, Wyoming and Samuel A. Martin of Dana, Iowa.

Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her departure eleven grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers, three half-brothers and two half-sisters. All her sisters and brothers reside at Viroqua, Wisconsin, excepting Mrs. Annie Martin of Oakdale, Washington."
