2nd Edition Incredible Tales, Stories, Letters & Reminiscences of some of the South Antelope Valley Pioneers, page 104
One of Antelope Valley's earliest settlers, Ruth Anna Pickit Jones, died on August 4, 2011 at her home in Lancaster. A twin, she was born on Nov. 12, 1903 in Fergus Falls, Minn. to Leslie and Effie Straub Pickit. Her twin sister died at 15 mo. From pneumonia resulting from whooping cough. Ruth recalls being told she was carried around on a pillow for a long time due to her fragile and petite body. She had one other sister, and two other brothers. The last of her siblings died in 1957.

Her family lived close to the railroad tracks in Minn. and a spark from a passing train caught the hay in the barn on fire, her fathers store and their residence. Ruth was carried to the nearby depot for safety. At the age of seven, Ruth traveled via train with her family to begin a new life in downtown Los Angeles, and eventually moved to the Antelope Valley for her mother's asthmatic condition. However, she passed away when Ruth was 16. When she moved to Palmdale, it was just starting to "bustle". She remembers the Palmdale Inn, White's Café, a grocery store, but would travel to JC Penny's in Lancaster or Glendale for clothes and shoes.

She became a boarding student at the Antelope Valley High School where she lived in the girl's dormitory and came home on the weekends. She traveled by horse and buggy, and later in an automobile. She graduated in 1923 - the first of four generations to graduate from AVHS. Her granddaughter, Trish Lockhart was the principal of the school from June 2006 to Mar. 2011.

She worked for the Telephone Company and the Post Office prior to her marriage to Alfred Earl Jones in 1926. Their wedding was at the home of Earl's parents. The minister was Rev. Wilson (the first Presbyterian minister in Palmdale) They had a very short honeymoon, and started their marriage with 25 cents. She and Earl raised their four children in Palmdale. Upon retirement, they traveled across the states several times before settling in Hemet, CA where they resided for ten years. Following Earl's death in Nov. 1986, Ruth returned to the Antelope Valley to be near her children. She lived at Mayflower Gardens and then for the past twelve years has lived with her daughter, Barbara Daggett, in Lancaster. She attended the Lancaster Presbyterian Church.

She loved to play cribbage every chance she got and didn't miss many of the LA Dodger baseball games on TV. She read the AV press daily and enjoyed reading Bill Warford's columns. She always voted, and in the early years helped on the Election Boards, counting ballots by hand until early the next morning. She never forgot a birthday, and most cards contained a hand written note in it. She also wrote hand written letters to her family - in spite of very deformed hands from arthritis. She did that until she reached 107 and her health started to decline.

She cooked on a wood stove, heated water in a reservoir at one end of the stove, made toast on a four-sided thing that sat on the stove, ironed with irons heated on the stove and washed clothes in a tub using a washboard, and hung them on the clothes line. She never had a washer, dryer or built-in dishwasher of her own. She was 13 years old when she first tried on make-up, 15 when she learned how to dance, 17 when she had her first date and never had a traffic ticket.

She never complained, and had a smile for everyone she met. Her impact on her family and anyone who met her will never be forgotten.

In addition to her parents and husband of 60 years, she was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and one grand-daughter.

Surviving are her children, Barbara Daggett of Lancaster, Marvin Jones of Palmdale, Dale Jones (Beverly) of NC, and Sandra Luckeroth (Luke) of Lancaster; grandchildren, Renee Oberdorf (Jon) of OR, Bruce Jones (Kyle) of NY, Paula Jones, Larry Jones of NC, Jan Arries of Escondido, Linda Howell (Randy) of Poway, Gary Luckeroth of Rosamond, Trish Lockhart (Steve) of Palmdale; Great grandchildren Curtis Jones of LA, Judston Jones, Tod Golder of NY, Richelle Sellers (Adam) of OR, Brianna Cothern of Rosamond, Trev and Cody Lockhart of Palmdale, Stacey Owen (Darryl) of NC, Stephanie English (David) of NC; Great-great ¬grandchildren Ashley Jones of NY, Cierra and Kaden Jones, Jaxin Sellers of OR, Michael and Mikayla Cothern of Rosamond, and Grayson English of NC.

A "Celebration of Life" Service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Presbyterian Church, 1661 W. Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hoffman Hospice, 655 W. ave. Q, Suite A, Palmdale, CA 93551.
