Gottlieb Schafer, who has been seriously ill at his home in West Bend for several weeks passed away Friday morning. He was recently returned home from a hospital in Iowa City, and all that loving hands and medical skill could do for him was done but to no avail.

Funeral services were held at Peace Lutheran church in West Bend Monday afternoon. Rev. A.E. Krause had charge of the services. The pall bearers were E.L. Blair, O.A. Maberry, Wm. L. Bell, A.H. Bonstetter, Ern Bleuer and Lee Morey. Interment was in the West Bend cemetery. Jerry Schutter had charge of the funeral.

Gottlieb F. Schafer was born at Kaiserlanden, Germany, on June 20, 1881. He died of heart disease here in West Bend on November 9, 1945, at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 19 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the land of his birth.

Mr. Schafer came to the United States at the age of 14 years. Before coming to Iowa, he worked in Illinois and Minnesota.

On March 3, 1910, he married Maria Elizabeth Schmidt. This union was blessed with thirteen children. One daughter, Frances Margaret, died in infancy and one son, Benjamin George, gave his life in the services of his country. His children are: Carl, Louis, William, Robert, Otto, Ernest, Eleanor, Wilma, Betty, Leona and Donald. William lives in Santa Barbara, California, and Ernest is at present at a separation center near San Diego, California. The others live near West Bend.

Besides his wife and children and a step-mother, he leaves to mourn his death: Five daughters-in-law--Mrs. Carl Schafer, Mrs. Louis Schafer, Mrs. Wm. Schafer, Mrs. Robert Schafer and Mrs. Otto Schafer; one son-in-law, George Maberry; eight grandchildren; one brother; three sisters; five step-brothers; and many other relatives and friends.
